Working with MapKit

1. Creating Map Views

Example: Basic Map View Setup

import UIKit
import MapKit

class ViewController: UIViewController {
    @IBOutlet weak var mapView: MKMapView!

    override func viewDidLoad() {
        super.viewDidLoad()
        mapView.delegate = self
    }
}

extension ViewController: MKMapViewDelegate {
    func mapView(_ mapView: MKMapView, didUpdate userLocation: MKUserLocation) {
        // Handle user location updates
    }
}
Property Type Description
mapView MKMapView Instance of the map view to display
delegate MKMapViewDelegate? Object that receives map view events
showsUserLocation Bool Whether to show the user's location on the map
userLocationAnnotationView MKAnnotationView? Custom annotation view for the user location
Note: Ensure that the MapKit framework is imported and the map view is properly connected to the storyboard or created programmatically.

2. Setting Map Region and Center

Property Description Values
region Defines the map's visible area including center and span MKCoordinateRegion
center Center coordinate of the map view CLLocationCoordinate2D

Example: Setting Map Region

import MapKit

let mapView = MKMapView()
let center = CLLocationCoordinate2D(latitude: 37.7749, longitude: -122.4194)
let span = MKCoordinateSpan(latitudeDelta: 0.01, longitudeDelta: 0.01)
let region = MKCoordinateRegion(center: center, span: span)

mapView.setRegion(region, animated: true)

Example: Setting Map Center

import MapKit

let mapView = MKMapView()
let center = CLLocationCoordinate2D(latitude: 37.7749, longitude: -122.4194)

mapView.setCenter(center, animated: true)

3. Adding Annotations

Property Value Description
title String? Title of the annotation
subtitle String? Subtitle of the annotation
coordinate CLLocationCoordinate2D Geographic coordinate of the annotation

Example: Adding a Basic Annotation

import MapKit

class Annotation: NSObject, MKAnnotation {
    var coordinate: CLLocationCoordinate2D
    var title: String?
    var subtitle: String?

    init(coordinate: CLLocationCoordinate2D, title: String?, subtitle: String?) {
        self.coordinate = coordinate
        self.title = title
        self.subtitle = subtitle
    }
}

let annotation = Annotation(
    coordinate: CLLocationCoordinate2D(latitude: 37.7749, longitude: -122.4194),
    title: "San Francisco",
    subtitle: "California"
)
Note: Annotations must conform to the MKAnnotation protocol to be displayed on a map.

4. Customizing Annotation Views

Property Description Notes
annotationView Custom view to display for annotation Must conform to MAAnnotationView
canShowCallout Whether to show callout bubble Default is false
calloutOffset Offset of callout from annotation Defaults to (0, 0)

Example: Custom Annotation View

class CustomAnnotationView: MKMarkerAnnotationView {
    override func prepareForReuse() {
        super.prepareForReuse()
    }

    override var annotation: MKAnnotation? {
        didSet {
            if let annotation = annotation as? CustomAnnotation {
                self.markerTintColor = annotation.color
                self.glyphText = annotation.title
            }
        }
    }
}

class CustomAnnotation: NSObject, MKAnnotation {
    var coordinate: CLLocationCoordinate2D
    var title: String
    var color: UIColor

    init(coordinate: CLLocationCoordinate2D, title: String, color: UIColor) {
        self.coordinate = coordinate
        self.title = title
        self.color = color
    }
}
Note: Use MKMarkerAnnotationView for default marker appearance with customization options.
Warning: Ensure custom annotation views are properly reused to avoid performance issues.

5. Using Map Overlays

Map overlays are visual elements added to a map to provide additional context or information. They can include polygons, polylines, circles, and custom views.

Overlay Type Description Usage
MKPolygon Represents a closed shape defined by an array of coordinates. let polygon = MKPolygon(coordinates: coordinates, count: coordinates.count)
MKPolyline Represents a line connecting multiple points on the map. let polyline = MKPolyline(coordinates: coordinates, count: coordinates.count)
MKCircle Represents a circular area centered at a coordinate with a specified radius. let circle = MKCircle(center: centerCoordinate, radius: 1000)
MKOverlayView Base class for custom overlay views. Subclass to define custom rendering.
class CustomOverlayView: MKOverlayView {
    override func draw(_ mapRect: MKMapRect, zoomScale: MKZoomScale, in context: CGContext) {
        // Custom drawing code here
    }
}

Example: Adding a Polygon Overlay

import MapKit

class ViewController: UIViewController {
    @IBOutlet weak var mapView: MKMapView!

    override func viewDidLoad() {
        super.viewDidLoad()
        let polygon = MKPolygon(coordinates: [
            CLLocationCoordinate2D(latitude: 37.7849, longitude: -122.409),
            CLLocationCoordinate2D(latitude: 37.7849, longitude: -122.408),
            CLLocationCoordinate2D(latitude: 37.7859, longitude: -122.408),
            CLLocationCoordinate2D(latitude: 37.7859, longitude: -122.409)
        ], count: 4)

        mapView.addOverlay(polygon)
    }

    func mapView(_ mapView: MKMapView, rendererFor overlay: MKOverlay) -> MKOverlayRenderer {
        if let polygon = overlay as? MKPolygon {
            let renderer = MKPolygonRenderer(polygon: polygon)
            renderer.fillColor = UIColor.blue.withAlphaComponent(0.5)
            renderer.strokeColor = UIColor.blue
            renderer.lineWidth = 2
            return renderer
        }
        return MKOverlayRenderer()
    }
}

Example: Adding a Circle Overlay

import MapKit

class ViewController: UIViewController {
    @IBOutlet weak var mapView: MKMapView!

    override func viewDidLoad() {
        super.viewDidLoad()
        let center = CLLocationCoordinate2D(latitude: 37.7849, longitude: -122.409)
        let circle = MKCircle(center: center, radius: 1000)

        mapView.addOverlay(circle)
    }

    func mapView(_ mapView: MKMapView, rendererFor overlay: MKOverlay) -> MKOverlayRenderer {
        if let circle = overlay as? MKCircle {
            let renderer = MKCircleRenderer(circle: circle)
            renderer.fillColor = UIColor.red.withAlphaComponent(0.3)
            renderer.strokeColor = UIColor.red
            renderer.lineWidth = 1
            return renderer
        }
        return MKOverlayRenderer()
    }
}

        let polyline = MKPolyline(coordinates: coordinates, count: coordinates.count)
        mapView.addOverlay(polyline)
    }
}

extension RouteViewController: MKMapViewDelegate {
    func mapView(_ mapView: MKMapView, rendererFor overlay: MKOverlay) -> MKOverlayRenderer {
        if let polyline = overlay as? MKPolyline {
            let renderer = MKPolylineRenderer(polyline: polyline)
            renderer.strokeColor = .blue
            renderer.lineWidth = 5
            return renderer
        }
        return MKOverlayRenderer()
